Slow Food Edinburgh Aims for Ark of Taste in 2016 & Beyond


In February Slow Food Edinburgh enjoyed a special Big Table dinner devoted to the Ark of Taste, with a menu highlighting Ark products from the talented team at Contini Cannonball. We heard from Josiah Lockhart, Ark of Taste in Scotland Coordinator who has been developing the Ark in Scotland

It's a really exciting time for the Ark here in Edinburgh. Slow Food globally has a target to include another 1000 products in the Ark by this September. Over 200 possible items have been identified in Scotland already, that's 200 unique and wonderful foods that could be lost forever if we don't take action. Local convivia are key to growing the Ark and Slow Food Edinburgh is no exception, we're putting the Ark at the heart of our campaigns and events this year

We've already highlighted existing Scottish Ark varieties in our work but getting more products onboard is our main objective

To support the Ark Slow Food Edinburgh is doing the following:

  • In February 2016, welcoming a new committee member, Lisa Bertrand, to the SFE committee to coordinate our Ark of Taste work
  • Continuing to focus on opportunities to highlight the Ark of Taste in upcoming events and campaigns
  • Actively seeking to work with producers, chefs and others passionate about our food heritage to promote the Ark
  • Supporting Slow Food Scotland in its Ark of Taste goals
  • Encouraging our members and supporters to get involved helping to identify, research and submit new foods for inclusion in the Ark

We therefore want to hear from you if you would like to get involved in helping research potential new items for the Ark

There are plenty of different varieties from forgotten fruit and vegetables to rare breeds, baked goods and everything in between. To help, Slow Food Scotland will be running a series of Ark of Taste Workshops across Scotland in Spring 2016 to go through the research and submission process - details will be updated here.
