Slow Food Week is coming up very soon, 1st – 8th June, and there's lots going on to celebrate good, clean and fair food in the city. We have meals at local restaurants, a tour of Gorgie farm and a pop-up mini-restaurant at Edinburgh Farmers’ Market.
Café St Out of the Ordinaire
On Monday 2nd June, we kick off the week with a meal from Neil Forbes at Café St Honore. A member of the Slow Food UK Chef's Alliance, Neil is putting together three courses and a glass of wine or a beer, for a very excellent £25. He’ll be featuring some Ark of Taste/Forgotten Foods to remind us of the hidden culinary gems that so often go unnoticed.
To book your place at the table, call Café St Honore direct on 0131 226 2211 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. More details of the menu are on their website here.
Tour de Gorgie
On Wednesday 4th June, we will be visiting Gorgie City Farm.
We’ll start at 6.30 with a tour of the farm for an hour or so.
Then it’s BBQ time, tasting Gorgie pork chops and Gorgie sausage hot dogs, with locally grown salads and Gorgie relish. (There will be a non-meat alternative.) This will be followed by a dessert and tea or coffee.
There’ll be samples of beer from Top Out brewery and soft drinks from Roots Soda. Finally, there’ll be a short talk and discussion about the farm's philosophy and future direction.
There are only twenty places for this event, costing £12.50 for Slow Food members and £15 for those yet to join. Tickets are available from the farm, either with a credit card payment on 0131 337 4202, or in person before the event.
Escargot Goes Slow
With their logo the snail, it seems appropriate to visit L'Escargot Blanc for their event on Thursday 5th June.
Chef /patron Fred Berkmiller is laying on a proper ‘nose-to-tail’ buffet-style meal, featuring the true flavour of pork from Gorgie.
In the proper French ‘nothing wasted’ style, Fred will be demonstrating how to put a whole pig on the table: Pâté, pig’s head, ears, black pudding, a roast, even sausages , plus one dessert (non-porcine!) All for £20.00
Book direct with L' Escargot Blanc either by calling 0131 2261890 or book online here.
Popping up at the Farmers’ Market
Bringing the week to a close is something a little special at the Edinburgh Farmers' Market on Saturday 7th June. Come and join Slow Food Edinburgh at Castle Terrace to celebrate Slow Food Week at our pop-up event to enjoy a local, seasonal brunch and lunch using market produce.
Brunch starts at 10.30am with our friends from the Edinburgh Larder Bistro. The menu includes smoked salmon, scrambled eggs and pastries, plus a glass of fizz. £10 for Slow Food members, £11 for non-members.
Lunch begins at 1pm with a platter of some of the best food at the market and artisan bread. The main course will be lamb paired with a local beer. This will be followed by a seasonal dessert, tea, coffee and chocolates. Lunch costs £19 for Slow Food members and £21 for non-members, including one beer or non-alcoholic alternative.
We'll be serving the food right there at the market, against the dramatic backdrop of Edinburgh Castle. We have 12 places at our table for each sitting, so booking is essential. Email us at email@example.com to reserve your space, including any dietary requirements.
Ingredients will be sourced from the market and we'll be joined for a few words by some of the producers. All surplus proceeds will go to support Slow Food Edinburgh and our work to support good, clean and fair food
We look forward to seeing you there!
