If you can find the right supplier, ordering a vegetable box enables you to sidestep the supermarkets and get local seasonal ingredients delivered to your Edinburgh doorstep that are both sustainable and delicious. Below we provide a guide to veg box suppliers in line with our Slow Food values: Good (seasonal, fresh, and flavourful); Clean (agro-ecological or organic methods that protect soil and biodiversity); and Fair (decent livelihoods for growers, accessible pricing, and transparent, short supply chains).
In case you’re interested, we also provide Slow Food Edinburgh guides to foraging for beginners and Edinburgh farmers markets.
East Coast Organics (Boggs Holdings, East Lothian)
For over 25 years East Coast Organics has been growing and selling organic produce, and has developed an impressive veg box delivery operation. They use a 100% electric delivery fleet charged by their own on-farm solar panels. They also avoids plastic packaging, opting for home-compostable alternatives. Their so-called flexiboxes provide a variety of organic options from overseas, alongside standard seasonal fruit and veg shares. As a fully certified organic farm with a low carbon delivery method, they clearly score highly in terms of Clean.
Phantassie Organics (East Linton)
This historic market garden in East Lothian provides traditional organic veg boxes ranging from small single boxes to large family shares, with add-ons like local organic eggs. Phantassie Organics produce is a fixture at the Market Street Edinburgh Farmers’ Market. They deliver across East Lothian and Edinburgh, with collection points in places like Peebles and West Linton. In terms of Clean, they combine certified organic standards with biodynamic practices, creating a balanced farm ecosystem that respects natural cycles. Phantassie also works transparently with a network of other small-scale Scottish and UK organic growers to fill seasonal gaps.
The Free Company (Balerno)
The Free Company is a regenerative, no-dig farm at the foot of the Pentland Hills. Their veg box contains seasonal, freshly harvested vegetables, which can be supplemented with local provisions like wild-fermented sourdough and small-scale Scottish dairy. It aligns well with Slow Food principles, with a no-dig system that leaves the soil microbiome completely undisturbed, capturing carbon and maximising nutrient density. They generally do deliveries on Thursday and Friday of each week, across Edinburgh and surrounding areas.
Edinburgh Community Food (City-wide)
Edinburgh Community Food delivers in spades on the Slow Food values of community health, equity, and fair access. As a non-profit social enterprise, its commercial revenue is funnelled into food education, cooking courses, and take-home packs for low-income families, giving it top marks for Fair. They provide a diverse range of fruit and veg boxes, including dedicated organic options. Important to note that some standard boxes include imported produce to keep prices low, but their dedicated organic options directly support regional growers like Pillars of Hercules (Fife) and local therapeutic growing spaces like Jock Tamson’s Gairden in Duddingston. Choosing this box directs funds into improved nutritional health equality across Edinburgh.
Lauriston Agroecology Farm (North Edinburgh)
Lauriston Farm is a landmark urban co-operative project flying the flag for community-led farming inside city limits. It’s important to note they don’t do home delivery, but they’re within relatively easy reach of central Edinburgh by public transport, and we wanted to highlight their great work. The veg box is a weekly or fortnightly bag of seasonal greens, roots, and herbs grown in Davidson’s Mains, available through a membership system. They also offer a solidarity membership tier to ensure fresh food is financially accessible to lower-income neighbours. It aligns well with Slow Food values by deploying strict agro-ecological and biodynamic frameworks, using local green waste for compost. It also actively builds urban biodiversity. Operated as a community-benefit society, it gets full marks for being Fair.
